Owls Down Women's Lacrosse, 14-13, In NEWLA Contest

Westfield, MA --- Westfield State sophomore Laura Chiricosta had six goals and an assist to lead Westfield State to a 14-13 victory over Worcester State in a key New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) game this afternoon.

The Owls, winners of seven straight, improved to 3-0 in the conference and 8-1 overall. Westfield hosts Bridgewater State in another key conference game on Tuesday, April 7. Worcester, which lost to Bridgewater, 18-12, last Tuesday, is 2-2 and 4-2.

There were five lead changes and seven ties in the exciting seesaw game. In addition, neither team had a lead of more than two goals.

Westfield jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Worcester scored three goals in the final 7:44 of the first half to take an 8-6 lead at the intermission.

Two goals by Chiricosta tied the score at 8-all, but Worcester took the lead for the final time on a goal by Shannon Feeley (West Springfield, MA), who led the Lancers with five goals and two assists.

Westfield took the lead for good, 11-9 with 18:29 remaining, with a mini 3-0 run. Junior Ally Brown (North Andover, MA) sparked the short scoring spurt with a goal and two assists.

The teams traded goals the remainder of the game, with Chiricosta scoring the eventual game-winning goal on a free position shot with 1:44 remaining that gave the Owls a 14-12 advantage.

Worcester's Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) scored on a free position with 54 seconds remaining. The Lancers won the draw control but Westfield freshman goalie Kaity Burns (Wilbraham, MA) made one of her nine saves with 42 seconds remaining.

Other multiple scorers for the Owls were Rachel Dionne (Feeding Hills, MA) with three goals and an assist, Brown with two goals and three assists, and freshman Kelcey Arnold (Dartmouth, MA) with two goals. Senior Rachel Costa (Reading, MA) had two assists and controlled the middle with eight draw controls.

Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) tallied four goals and an assist for the Lancers and Jamieson scored two goals.
