Husson Uses Second Half Surge To Defeat Women's Lacrosse, 10-9

Worcester, MA --- Husson freshman Abi Staab (Berlin, VT) scored four goals including a game tying marker to propel the Eagles to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Worcester State in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

Husson earns their first triumph of the year as they move to 1-3 while the Lancers slip to 0-2 on the season.

The Eagles were also led by sophomore teammates Caitlyn Stauffer (Brookfield, CT) and Haley Huntington (W. Gardiner, ME) who each had two goals apiece.  Huntington's second tally proved to be the eventual game-winner as she broke the 9-9 tie.

Stauffer paced the visitors on defense as she collected six ground balls and caused two turnovers while freshman Haley Thibeau (Gardiner, ME) grabbed five.

The Lancers were led by senior Meagan Sheehan (Dunstable, MA) who netted a hat-trick and also dished out an assist.  Freshman classmates Michelle Tully (Tewksbury, MA) and Jaclyn Lawlor (Westford, MA) each scored two goals in the contest.

Defensively, junior Stacey Doherty led WSU with six ground balls while senior Rhetta Guimond (Royalston, MA), sophomore Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA), and Lawlor combined for 13 ground balls.

The Blue and Gold jumped out to the early 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, but the Eagles answered right back with two goals of their own to knot the score at 2-2 at the 21:56 mark.

The two squads traded markers before the Lancers would erupt, scoring four goals in less than three minutes including a pair by Tully, to gain the 7-3 edge at the intermission.

Husson gained the early momentum in the second half by going on a 3-1 run in the first nine minutes to slice into Worcester State's now 8-6 lead.  The Eagles tacked on three consecutive goals – including two by Staab – to gain the 9-8 edge at 13:35.

Worcester State would answer and tie the game at 12:04 as Sheehan completed the hat-trick making the score 9-9.  Just over three minutes later, the Eagles gained the final lead of the contest as Huntington netted her fifth goal of the season clinching the victory for the visitors.

The Lancers missed a great opportunity to tie the score with 1:03 left in the contest as Guimond fired a shot from the right side, but junior Kaleigh Morneau (Twin Mountain, NH) made a spectacular save for the visitors preserving the win.

Morneau collected the win in net for Husson as she made eight saves while third-year goalkeeper Alexandra Chisholm (N. Brookfield, MA) pushed aside six shots for WSU.

The Lancers held slim margins in shots (25-24) and ground balls (34-31).

Both teams continue non-conference play next week on the road as the Lancers travel to St. Joseph's on Sunday for a 10 AM tilt while Husson will play Southern Maine on Tuesday for a 4 o'clock affair.
