Women's Lacrosse Falls To UMass Dartmouth, 12-8

Worcester, MA --- UMass Dartmouth junior Brittany Enos (E. Falmouth, MA) potted three goals and added two assists to help lead the Corsairs to a 12-8 victory over Worcester State this afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Coughlin Field.

UMD (3-3) also received a hat trick and one helper each from sophomore Taylor Corsano (Bourne, MA) and freshman Shelby Freidland (New Bedford, MA) as senior Casey Otovic (Wilmington, MA) and Corsano combined for nine ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The Lancers (0-4) were paced by sophomore Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) who recorded two markers and two assists and freshman classmates Jaclyn Lawlor (Westford, MA) and Michelle Tully (Tewksbury, MA) both chipped in with a pair of goals each.

Junior Stacey Doherty (Westford, MA) led the Blue and Gold defensively with five ground balls and four draws while third-year Daryl Powell (Beverly, MA) and senior Rhetta Guimond (Royalston, MA) both forced two miscues apiece.

Freidland and Enos started off the game with markers before Worcester State knotted the score 2-2 on goals by O'Brien and Lawlor.

UMD went on a 3-1 run over the next six minutes of play to lead 5-3 at the 11:14 mark, but Worcester State netted tallies 24 seconds apart near the nine minute mark to knot the score heading into the break.

UMass Dartmouth used a six goal outburst over the first 15 minutes of the second half to take over a commanding 10-5 margin with two each by Freidland and Enos.

The Lancers broke the ice with a free position goal by Tully with 11:40 left to play, but after a marker by Otovic at the 8:45 mark, third-year net minder Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA) was spectacular stopping five of the next Lancer shots on goal as she helped UMD cruise ahead for the win.

Donovan collected 14 saves while senior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) ended the contest with nine saves and three ground balls.

The Corsairs held the slim 29-26 edge in shots. Worcester State led in draw controls, 12-10, but the visitors had the 8-3 advantage in the category in the second stanza. Both squads netted two free possession goals each.

The Lancers had three yellow cards and held their guests off the scoreboard when they were without a player on the field.

Worcester State opens NEWLA play with Salem State at home on Saturday at 6 PM. UMass Dartmouth entertains Fitchburg State on Thursday at 4:30.
