Women's Lacrosse Snaps Skid to Earn First Victory of Season

 

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Amy Tucker (N. Attleboro, MA), junior Daryl Powell (Beverly, MA) and senior Meagan Sheehan (Dunstable, MA) all registered five points apiece as Worcester State ended a 10-game losing streak in an 18-8 triumph over Mass Maritime in NEWLA action this evening at John Coughlin memorial field.

For the Lancers (1-7, 1-3 NEWLA), Tucker recorded a career-best five markers as Powell and Sheehan both recorded a hat-trick with two helpers each. Freshman Angela Grassetti (Feedings Hills, MA) contributed a season mark of three assists with one goal and a contest-high seven ground balls.

First-year Jaclyn Lawlor (Westford, MA) was a presence on both sides with two goals, five ground balls and a trio of forced miscues.

The Buccaneers (2-8, 1-3 NEWLA) were propelled by junior Kim Courcy (Warwick, RI) who notched three goals with six ground balls and a game-best seven draws. Third-year Briana Bergstrom (Quincy, MA) added two tallies while classmate Shelagh Hogan (N. Andover, MA) chipped in with six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

With the score knotted 1-1 with 26:46 left in the opening half, the Lancers rattled off eight goals over the next 21 minutes of play to take over a commanding 9-1 margin at the 15:18 mark.

After two goals 39 seconds apart by WSU, Mass Maritime potted a marker with under four minutes left for the 11-2 score at the intermission.

Courcy, Bergstrom and sophomore Hillary Doucette (Manchester, NH) all scored for the Buccaneers to open the second stanza to help the visitors trail by six, but the Lancers put the game away with a 7-1 spurt for the 17-6 lead with 11:11 remaining.

Mass Maritime scored twice more before the end of the contest for what would be the final score.

Senior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) and junior Alexandra Chisholm (N. Brookfield, MA) split time for the Lancers as they combined for seven stops. MMA first-year Tenley Gillett (Manchester, NH) collected 10 saves in the setback.

Worcester State led in shots (33-19 – 20-5 in first half), ground balls (42-32) while the Buccaneers held the 16-13 edge in draw controls.

The Lancers return to action on Thursday with a 4 PM road match against Rhode Island College. Mass Maritime travels to Framingham State for a 12 o'clock NEWLA contest.
