Women's Lacrosse Falls At Home To Western Connecticut

 

Worcester, MA --- Junior Devon Edwards (Islip, NY) had a game-best seven points with five goals and two assists to help lift Western Connecticut to a 19-7 triumph over Worcester State in non-conference women's lacrosse action this evening at Coughlin Field.

The Colonials (9-4) were also paced by senior Brianna Mitterando (Mastic Beach, NY) and sophomore Hyla Costello (Southington, CT) who both recorded four points apiece with two markers and a pair of helpers each. Junior Emily Brooks (Kingston, NY) potted two tallies and finished with four draws and classmate Kelly Brennan (Hicksville, NY) added two goals for the visitors.

Sophomore Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) led the Lancers (1-10) with a hat trick and three caused turnovers. Freshman Michelle Tully (Tewksbury, MA) chipped in with a pair of markers while junior Daryl Powell (Beverly, MA) recorded a contest-best six draw controls.

Senior Meagan Sheehan (Dunstable, MA) had a great all-around game with four ground balls, two draws and one goal for WSU.

Western Connecticut started off the game with a 4-1 run with two tallies each by Edwards and Brooks.

After junior Stacey Doherty (Westford, MA) and O'Brien each scored for Worcester State to get within a goal at the 17:18 mark, the Colonials would rattle off nine straight goals over the next 10 minutes to open up a commanding 13-3 edge. Edwards, Brennan and junior Nicole Perrone (Brookfield, CT) all had two markers apiece in the run for Western Connecticut.

Tully would score twice 46 second apart before the Colonials ended the period with three straight for the 16-5 advantage at the intermission.

With running time on the clock Mitterando found the back of the net twice four minutes apart to start off the second period and O'Brien scored twice for Worcester State inside the 10 minute mark. Junior Amanda Simon (Brick, NJ) hit home the final goal of the game for the visitors for the final score.

Sophomore Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY) stopped 10 of the 17 shots she saw this evening and she finished with a squad-best five ground balls. Senior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) and junior Alexandra Chisholm (N. Brookfield, MA) split halves between the pipes and combined for six saves.

Western Connecticut held the 29-22 edge in shots and the 17-11 lead in draw controls. Worcester State had the slight 32-30 advantage in ground balls.

Both squads will play non-conference opponents on Thursday at 7 PM. Worcester State heads to Gordon to play the Scots for the first-time in club history while the Colonials entertain Westfield State.
