Women's Lacrosse Ends Skid With 16-7 Triumph Over Becker

Leicester, MA --- Freshman Jaclyn Lawlor (Westford, MA) scored a game high seven goals, propelling Worcester State to a 16-7 win over Becker College in NEWLA action Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers (2-11, 2-4 NEWLA) got the scoring started 1:36 into the contest when Lawlor ripped a shot into the bottom right corner of the Hawks net for an early 1-0 lead.

Becker (3-12, 2-5 NEWLA) responded with back to back goals from senior Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, VT), the second coming off a free position shot, giving the Hawks a 2-1 advantage. The excitement was short lived for the Hawks as the Lancers scored the next five goals of the game, including two more off the stick of Lawlor, putting Worcester State in front 6-2.

The Hawks came soaring back when sophomore Shannon Smith (Barre, Vt.) and Hazen teamed up to score four unanswered goals, tying the game at 6-6.

Worcester State took the lead with 5:22 remaining in the half when sophomore Amy Tucker (North Attleboro, MA) hit senior Meagan Sheehan (Dunstable, MA) with a pretty pass from behind the Becker net, giving the Lancers a 7-6 advantage. Junior Stacey Doherty (Westford, MA) followed with a score off of a free position shot, giving Worcester State an 8-6 lead at the break.

The second half started off on a promising note for the Hawks when second-year Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, NY) took the opening draw control the length of the field for her lone goal of the game, bringing the Hawks to within one at 8-7.

Unfortunately for Becker that would be the last time they would score for the rest of the game. Worcester State went on to score the final eight goals of the game, including four more tallies from Lawlor, securing the 16-7 victory.

In addition to Lawlor's seven points, Doherty, Sheehan and sophomore Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) finished with two goals each. Doherty and Lawlor each had a trio of draws while sophomore Michel'le St. Pierre (Seekonk, MA) chipped in with a contest-best six ground balls.

Worcester State senior goalie Haley Erickson (Saugas, MA) made six saves as the Lancers. Freshman netminder Karena Prescott (New Bedford, MA) made 19 saves for the Hawks.

Both squads will play again on Wednesday. Worcester State will entertain Elms on "Senior Day" at 7 PM while Becker travels to Nashua, NH to take on Daniel Webster at 4 o'clock.
