Lancers Post 16-5 Triumph over Elms on “Senior Night”

Worcester, MA --- Senior Meagan Sheehan (Dunstable, MA) had a game to remember as she scored a career-high five goals to move into 10th on Worcester State's all-time scoring list to help lead Worcester State to a 16-5 victory over Elms in NEWLA action this evening at Coughlin Field.

The Lancers (3-11, 3-4 NEWLA) were also paced by freshman Jaclyn Lawlor (Westford, MA) who finished with three goal, two assists, five ground balls and a game-best six draw controls. Sophomore Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) also added a hat-trick with one assist and four ground balls.

First-year Angela Grassetti (Feeding Hills, MA) distinguished herself by picking up a season-best nine balls with five caused turnovers. With six ground balls this evening, junior Stacey Doherty (Westford, MA) is just four away from tying the single-season record held by former WSU standout Ann Clark who accomplished the feat in 2004 – her freshman season.

With 42 career markers and 22 helpers, Sheehan leaped past Kim Massa (2005-06) on the all-time scoring list for 66 career points in her four year career.

The Blazers (0-14, 0-7 NEWLA) were propelled by sophomore Kayla Narey (S. Hadley, MA) who finished with three goals while sophomore Brianna Lyons (Canton, MA) and senior Emily Walsh (Hadley, MA) chipped in with one goal apiece. Walsh also added three ground balls, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Slowly but surely, the Blue and Gold whittled down the clock and jumped out to a 5-0 advantage over the first 20 minutes of the contest with two goals by Sheehan.

After O'Brien and Sheehan tallied goals 30 seconds apart near the six-minute mark, Nary broke the shutout with 5:38 remaining in the first to help Elms trail 7-1.

Sheehan would finish off the stanza with her fourth goal on a free possession goal with 4:30 left.

Nary started off the second half with a goal 5:02 into the period, but the Lancers went on a 5-1 run over the next nine minutes of play to get into running time for the 12-3 advantage with 13:48 on the clock.

Narey sent in her team-leading 27th goal at the 9:01 mark, but Worcester State closed out the contest with a 3-1 run to earn their third win of the season.

Senior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) stopped three shots in the win for the Lancers while her counterpart, fourth-year Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, MA), tallied 16 saves in the setback. Schrutt led her team on defense by picking up seven ground balls and forcing a pair of miscues.

Worcester State held the 39-12 lead in shots, the 44-25 edge in ground balls and the 17-7 edge in draw controls.

Both squads close out their season with NEWLA opponents in the next week. Worcester State heads to Westfield State for a 7 o'clock matchup on Friday night while Elms heads to Bridgewater State on Saturday for a 5 PM match-up.
