UMass-Dartmouth Pulls Ahead of Worcester State in Tuesday Night Play

WORCESTER, Mass.—Worcester State (3-5) fell 21-12 by the hands of UMass-Dartmouth (3-2) during a Tuesday matchup on March 29th at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

 

Worcester State came out strong in the first half, scoring two goals within the first three minutes of play. The goals were scored by Worcester State's Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass.) and Jackie Connors (Ashland, Mass.).

 

UMass-Dartmouth retaliated with a run of eight unanswered goals from Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.), Catrina Longo (Billerica, Mass.), Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.), and Raquel Riley (Wakefield, Mass.), leaving the score at 8-2 with seven minutes of play remaining in the first half. Worcester State's Connors narrowed the gap by scoring four goals to end the half with a score of 9-6.

 

UMass-Dartmouth opened up the second half of play scoring five unanswered goals within the first seven minutes. The first goal of the half was from Kane, from where Julia DiPillo (Medway, Mass.) logged two in a row. Douty scored a goal with 23:19 remaining, from where Kane knocked in another just 15 seconds later.

 

The remainder of the second half was a back and forth offensive showcase between the Lancers and the Corsairs.

 

On the field, the Lancers were led by Connors, who scored six goals for the night. Pitching in for the Lancers was Little who had three goals of her own. The Corsairs were led by Kane who took 15 shots, and scored eight goals.

 

While Worcester State held the advantage in draw controls (21-14) against UMass-Dartmouth, the Corsairs outshot the Lancers 41-27 and forced the Lancers to commit 21 turnovers during play.

 

The loss was given to Worcester State's goalie Krissy Pessa (Walpole, Mass.). Pessa's record now falls to an even 4-4 on the season. Pessa recorded 10 saves for the night. Corsair's keeper, Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) earned the win for the night, giving her a record of 2-2 on the season. Burchill recorded nine saves during play.

 

UMass-Dartmouth will return to play on Thursday (Mar. 31) against Salem State for a 7:00 pm match-up. The Lancer's will be back in action for MASCAC play against Westfield State on Saturday (April 2) for an 11:00 am game at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.
