Lancers Open Season with 12-4 Win Over Smith

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State took a 7-2 lead at halftime on their way to a 12-4 victory over Smith College in the women's lacrosse season opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon at Coughlin Field.

 Shea Jarvis (Auburn, Mass.) scored four goals and Lily Gendron (Lakeville, Mass.) had three goals and three assists as the Lancers improve to 1-0 on the year.

Jarvis scored a pair of goals in the first quarter to break a 1-1 tie as the Lancers went on a 5-0 run between the middle of the first and second periods. She completed her four-goal night with two goals 1:13 apart in the second period, putting the Lancers up 6-1 at the time.

Smith (0-1) had goals from four different scorers, including Sydney Havlick (Murrieta, Calif.), who had a goal and an assist. They traded goals twice with Worcester State in the third quarter, with Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, Calif.) and Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y.) scoring in that period. Arancio cut the deficit to 9-4 with under a minute left in the period, but Hannah Nolan (Pepperell, Mass.) answered for Worcester State before the third quarter horn.

Ashley Hurley (Agawam, Mass.) and Gendron scored early in the final quarter to cap the scoring for the game.

Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, Mass.), Abby Lauzon (Lakeville, Mass.) and Abigail Wing (Griswold, Conn.) all had multi-point nights for the Lancers. Erickson scored twice and added one assist, while picking up two ground balls. Lauzon had a goal and an assist and Wing had a pair of helpers.

Stella Alphas (Weston, Mass.) had three ground balls to lead the Pioneers, who also got a goal from Reese Gittelman (Ocean City, Md.).

Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich.) made 16 saves for the Pioneers, while Savanna Rosado (Milford, Mass.) stopped 11 shots in the Lancer net.

Worcester State is on the road on Saturday when they travel to Wellesley for a 12:00 PM game.

Smith hosts Fitchburg State at the same time in Northampton.
