Lancers Sail to Victory over the Blues in Home Opener

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Lacrosse (1-1,0-0) hosted the Wellesley College Blues (0-2, 0-0) in their home opener on Saturday afternoon. The game was played in recognition of the HEADStrong foundation and the Game Hair Havoc Game Day. Game Hair Havoc is an online fundraising campaign that empowers athletes to style their Game Hair in an effort to raise awareness and funds for families overcome by cancer.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

First period action would get started as graduate student attacker Shea Jarvis (Auburn, MA) would charge into the scoring zone early, netting an early 1-0 lead for Worcester. Just 50 seconds later sophomore midfielder Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, MA) would send a nice pass to first year midfielder Madigan Kelley (Bourne, MA) for the 2-0 lead. Junior attacker Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hills, MA) would send her shot into the five hole to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead on the Lancers first free position attempt of the day. First year attacker Meghan Bowen (Westfield, MA) whipped a nice pass over the middle to sophomore attacker Molly Witkowski (Greenville, NY) for another Lancer goal 30 seconds later followed by a Witkowski pass behind the net to Fisher for the goal to give the lancers a 5-1 lead with six minutes remaining in the quarter. Witkowski would continue her dominance as she recorded her second goal of the game and the quarter off a quick release from junior Abigail Wing (Griswold, CT) into the front of the cage, for the Lancers sixth goal. The opening quarter would see the game sit with a 6-1 advantage for the Lancers.

 

Jarvis, repeating her action from the first quarter, would open up scoring in the second with a goal off another set piece free position attempt . Hurley would extend the lead off a pass from junior Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, MA) to put the Lancers up 8-1. Senior defender Sarah Melanson (Wakefield, MA) would be on the rewarding end of another Erickson pass, charging the net to score and give the Lancers a 9-1 lead. Abigail Wing would tack on not one, not two, but three straight goals to push the Lancers to a 12-2 advantage before halftime would be called.

 

The third quarter would see another Abigail, this time sophomore midfielder Abigail Vincent (Lakeville, MA) scores 35 seconds in to extend the score to 13 for Worcester, which was followed up not long after by Erickson for goal number 14. Witkowski would finally secure a hat trick of her own in the game, with the Lancers 15th goal before the power shooting of Abigail's Wing and Vincent, would see the third quarter rest with a 17-2 score. 

 

The final quarter of action would see Wellesley open the scoring off a charging play by the Blue's Finley Tipton, but Jarvis would tack on one more for her as she scored her 4th goal of the game. Then sophomore midfielder Shannon Donahue (Dennis, MA) would score off a ricochet to score the final Lancer goal of the game. Wellesley would respond with two goals in the final 90 seconds of action, but Worcester would walk away handedly with the 19-5 victory. .

 

Worcester State moves to (2-1, 0-0) on the season while Wellesley drops to (0-3,0-0). Worcester State is back in action next Wednesday on John Coughlin when they host Simmons College at 4pm.
