Lancers Fall to Saints in Comeback Bid

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Lacrosse (4-1, 0-0) team wraps up their pre-Spring Break schedule tonight when they head to Emmanuel (1-3, 0-0) for a Thursday night showdown. The Lancers are coming off a three game win streak with a 9-6 win over Southern Maine this past Saturday, and hope to extend it to four after claiming the 14-6 victory over Emmanuel last year at home.

Final: Lancer 8, Saints 9

How it Happened:

The action begins with a draw control from sophomore Madeline Wright (Mattapoisett, MA) for Emmanual, with a shot right of the bat by sophomore Brianna Stephenson (Waterboro ME) which was high. The first quarter of action was a back and forth battle for most of the 15 minutes, lot of shots by Emmanual but saved by Lancer Junior Olivia LaValle (Peabody, MA). The Lancers would open the scoring with just over three minutes left off a sophomore Molly Witkowski (Greenville, NY) goal in action from graduate student Shea Jarvis (Auburn, MA). That goal would remain the sole action of the quarter in a defensive set until the clock was just about to hit zero when Junior Abigail Wing (Griswold, CT) slipped one past the keeper to push the Lancers into a 2-0 lead.

The Saints would not wait long to get one back on the board as Wright would open the scoring for Emmanuel. The Saints would tie it up with four and half in another defensive quarter, but the Lancers would reclaim the lead off another Wing goal, this time from Junior Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hill, MA), with just under two minutes to go. The Saints would again respond at the end of the quarter to tie it up but the Lancers would refuse to go into the half down, again scoring a last second goal, this time from Witkowski.

Beginning of the third started out with a save by junior Olivia LaValle (Peabody, MA) off a shot by Wright. After a back and forth game Saints secured a free position shot taken by junior Dejaliyah Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, NH) that was a goal, but then shown as no goal because of an illegal stick. Worcester would respond with a legitimate goal by Shea Jarvis to keep the Lancers in the lead. The Saints responded with a goal from sophomore Livia Fedele (Spencerport, NY). Another shot by Wright would tie the game back up 5-5. With 2 seconds left in the 3rd Lancer's would again go for a last second goal from Jarvis assisted by first year Madigan Kelley (Bourne, MA) to bring the Lancers back in the lead.

The fourth quarter would follow similar plays as quarters past with the Saints responding with a goal from Fedele to bring us back into a tie game. Worcester immediately responds with a goal from Jarvis to bring them back into the lead. Emmanuel did not like they were losing so Wright would again go for the response with a goal assisted by junior Rachel Caned (Woodstock, CT) A big save by LaValle, after a break away by Srimouksavanh, would prevent the opportunity for the lead, but with Worcester getting a yellow card the Saints sophomore Ella Marshitz (Naperville, IL) would responds with a goal putting them in the lead for the first time in the game. After a battle in the midfield, Worcester finally answers with a goal from Wing assisted by Hurley for another combo pair goal. After a time out the Saints came out strong with a goal from Marschitz assisted by Srimouksavanh. As Worcester battled to tie the game, the strong defense of the Saint would hold them off resulting in loss number two for the Lancers with a score of 9-8.

LaValle would end the night with 31 saves and a .571% in the game while Jarvis led the night with three goals and two assists.

The Lancers now move to (4-2, 0-0)  as they switch their gears to Spring Break play down in Panama Beach, Florida.
