Bolio, Osburn Help Baseball Sweep Mass Maritime, 8-3 and 11-4

 

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Freshman Jeff Bolio's (Oxford, MA) RBI single snapped a 4-4 fifth inning tie and ignited a six-run rally that lifted Worcester State to an 11-4 nightcap victory over Massachusetts Maritime and a sweep of a MASCAC baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field, as the Lancers took the opener by an 8-3 final.

Freshman Michael Ivas (Princeton, MA) added a two-run double in the decisive fifth frame in the nightcap triumph for the visiting Lancers (15-24, 6-8 MASCAC), who also received run-scoring singles off the bats of sophomores Dan Ubele (Tyngsboro, MA) and Joseph Carlier (Rockland, MA) as well as an run producing two-bagger from junior Kurt Sabacinski (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) as part of the rally. 

The host Buccaneers (12-19, 3-11 MASCAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat of the second contest on an error and an RBI single by senior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, MA), but Worcester State evened matters in the top of the second frame on Ubele's groundout and an RBI single by Ivas. 

Massachusetts Maritime regained the lead in bottom of the second on an error, but the Lancers again knotted the game 3-3 in the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman Cody Osburn (Fair Oaks, CA) before taking a 4-3 edge in the fourth on a passed ball that scored Ubele. 

The Buccaneers squared the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame on sophomore Bob Lee's (Braintree, MA) RBI groundout, setting up the visitors' deciding rally in the fifth.

Ivas rapped out two hits and drove in three total runs in the nightcap victory for Worcester State, which also received two hits each from Bolio, Sabacinski, Carlier and Ubele as a part of 14-hit attack in support of junior Alex Teal (Malden, MA), who allowed four runs (one earned) with five strikeouts and four walks.

Teal (5-5), who finished the contest allowing one base-knock in his final three innings of work, ended his season with a campaign with 55 strikeouts 50.2 innings.

Mulhern collected two of Massachusetts Maritime's six hits in the nightcap setback, as the Buccaneers also received doubles from senior Billy Shouldice (Rutland, VT), sophomore Matt Pelletier (Bradford, MA) and freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, MA). 

Freshman Tyler Smith (Bellingham, MA) suffered the setback on the mound for the hosts, allowing four earned runs and fanning two in four innings of work to fall to 1-3 on the spring.

Worcester State jumped out to a 5-0 first inning advantage in the opener, receiving RBI singles from Sabacinski, Osburn, Ivas, junior Nick Bonofiglio (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and freshman David Ruggiero (Peabody, MA) in the frame, but Massachusetts Maritime answered with three tallies in the bottom half of the inning, as Rosano tripled and scored on an error while Shouldice and Mulhern added RBI singles. 

The score remained the same until the seventh when the Lancers plated three insurance runs on a two-run Osburn triple that was followed by Ruggiero's sacrifice fly to account for the final, as Sabacinski collected three hits for the visitors, who also received two safteies and three RBI from Osburn to go with two hits each from Carlier and junior Nick Gezotis (Westfield, MA) as part of another 14-hit attack. 

Bonofiglio (4-4) allowed two earned runs and struck out seven in going the distance for Worcester State in the opener. 

Shouldice and Mulhern each had two hits as part of an eight-hit attack for the Buccaneers in the lid-lifter, as senior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, MA) fanned a pair over six innings of work as his record drops to 0-6.

Massachusetts Maritime closes out its 2012 campaign on Tuesday afternoon by hosting Babson in the 40th Anniversary Celebration Game for Head Coach Bob Corradi at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 PM.

The Lancers finish the season on a high note wining six out of their last nine contests.
