Second Half Struggles Lead Lancers Dropping One to the Owls

Worcester, MA- The Lancers Women's Basketball team had a tough task ahead of them this evening, as they went on the road to take on the Westfield State University Owls in a midweek matchup. Despite their best efforts, Worcester State wouldn't be able to pull out the upset despite getting off to a hot start in a true tale of two halves.

The opening couple of quarters were all Lancers. After the first ten minutes Worcester State was up 14 points, and heading into the half it looked like they were in complete control up 34-16. The senior Gallella twins, Elizabeth and Erin (Tewksbury, Mass.) combined for 17 points in the first half, accounting for half of the Lancers' scoring.

Westfield State completely turned the tide after the halftime break, rallying to score 23 points in the third quarter to pull within striking distance of the Lancers. With two minutes left in the fourth, the Owls took their first lead of the game since they were up 2-0 at the beginning of the game, leading to a tense final couple of minutes. Unfortunately for the Lancers, the Owls completed the comeback to raise their MASCAC record to 7-3, while Worcester State fell to 4-5.

Both Erin and Elizabeth Gallella finished the night with a team-leading 15 points, and junior Nyah Thomas (Attleboro, Mass.) led the Lancers with seven boards.

Worcester State will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as they take on Fitchburg State University for their Play4Kay game.
