Lancers Race Past Trailblazers with Big Win on Senior Night

Worcester, MA- With just a pair of regular-season games remaining on the Lancer women's basketball team's schedule, Worcester State hosted the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Trailblazer this evening. Before the match commenced, the Lancers honored their seniors as they stepped foot on John P. Brissette Court for the last time.

Seniors Honorees on the Night Included:

Graduate Student and Student Coach Gigi LeMay (Grafton, MA)

Graduate Student Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, MA)

Erin Gallella (Tewskbury, MA)

Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, MA)

Madison Gutierrez (Holyoke, MA)

Despite the ceremony, it was all business once the game tipped off. The Lancers were quick to take charge of this one, jumping out to an early 12-0 lead. At the end of the first quarter, Worcester had taken complete control with a 25-15 margin. The foot would not come off the gas pedal in the second quarter, with the Lancers turning their dominance into a 42-24 lead heading into the halftime break.

How solid was Worcester State's first half performance? They boasted 47.5% team shooting percentage, and more impressively hit that number whilst spreading the wealth, with nine Lancers making their way onto the score sheet, four of whom scored at least five points.

Throughout the entirety of the second half the Lancers really began to pull away. There was little the trailblazers could do to stop a strong showing for Worcester State, led by senior Madison Guitierrez (Holyoke, Mass.) who finished 14 points. Right behind her was junior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass.) with 12. Sophomore Abby St. Martin (Putnam, Conn.) led the Lancers with seven rebounds to lead to the final score of 76-40.

Tonight marked an important win for Worcester State, as they now stand at 6-5 in the MASCAC. With just one more game to go before the playoffs, the Lancers are looking strong for the playoffs. That last regular season matchup will come on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on the road against Framingham State University.
