Worcester, MA- In a rematch from earlier this season that saw Worcester State come away with a big 6-0 victory, the Lancer Field Hockey team (6-10, 5-4) looks to get a leg up in the postseason with a win today that will help the team solidify their third seed placement in the postseason. With a win today, the Lancers could very well see Salem State for the 6th time in two years as they faced the Vikings in the MASCAC semifinals last year as well.
Final
Worcester State: 4
Salem State: 1
How it Happened:
The first quarter saw Worcester trying to strike first on offense but the Viking defense was too strong and determined in the first to not repeat their last showing against Worcester. The Vikings opened up the scoring action in a bid to get the advantage on the day. Worcester would be unable to respond in the opening 15-minute action.
The second quarter saw the Lancers finally click into offensive gear as they recorded a goal from first year forward Rihanna Morin (Burrillville, RI) that would tie the game 1-1. Defensive would become the name of the rest of the quarter as each team looked for the leg up on each other, but the halftime would come with both teams stalled at one.
The third would be all Lancers as they found their offensive striking power this time as junior Kaelin Coleman (Attleboro, MA) scored with the setup from senior Natalya Morin (Barre, MA) to give Worcester a 2-1 lead in the third. Senior Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) and her defensive unit of junior Allison Keenan (Marlborough, MA), first year Kylie Casey (Hubbardston, MA) and sophomore Maddie Parker (Leominster, MA) would continue to hold down the fort to keep the 2-1 lead into the fourth.
The fourth would be complete Lancer control as they added two additional insurance goals to the tally, the first, a Morin special, as Rihanna Morin received the pass from Natalya Morin, followed up by Natalya Morin secure her own goal in the game to take the 4-1 lead and victory on the afternoon.
The fourth would see Rihanna Morin strike again to extend the lead with the assist from Natalya Morin who would also be the one to score goal number 4 to give the lancers a 4-1 lead. The lancers defense would hold off the vikings and they would come out the victors.
