BOSTON, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's cross country team took ninth place out of 23 teams at the Suffolk Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers placed two runners in the top 20, with Andrew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.) finishing 16th and Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.) placing 17th. Fottler, the reigning MASCAC Runner of the Week, ran the 8K course in a time of 26:27. Carleton was just four seconds behind his teammate.
All five Lancers who contributed to the team score placed in the top-100 of a field of 225 student-athletes. Wayne Carey (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished the course in 28:20, good for 53rd place. Ethan Goodreau (Spencer, Mass.) took 81st, while Robert Doig (Ashby, Mass.) was the 100th athlete to cross the finish line.
Dartmouth College won the overall event, while Colby's Tyler Morris took the individual crown.
The women's team raced four student-athletes, with Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.) leading the way with a 47th place finish. Clark finished her 5K in 25:50, while her classmate Erica Hanlon (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was just four spots back in 26:01.
Sophomore Caitlin Conneely (Tewksbury, Mass.) was 72nd with a time of 26:37, and Cassidy Lefferts (Palmer, Mass.) finished her race in 29:02, placing 120th.
After an extra week of training, the Lancers will run at the MASCAC Championships in Leominster, Massachusetts on October 30th.
