BREWSTER, Mass. – Senior Jake Poitras (Harwich, Mass.) was the winner of the Longest Drive event as the Worcester State University men's and women's golf teams competed at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship.
Teams from 19 colleges and universities across New England gathered at The Captains Course in Brewster, MA, on Sunday and Monday, October 17-18, 2021 for the 86th Annual Men's and 5th Annual Women's New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship. Ninety-one Division III golfers competed.
Worcester State finished 15th on the men's side of the tournament, while a pair of Lancer women made their collegiate debut as individual competitors.
Poitras finished tied for 38th along with teammate Will Sjogren (Auburn, Mass.), with both of them shooting a 20-over-par 164 for the tournament. Poitras fired a first-round 80 and an 84 on Monday, while Sjogren shot 82 each day.
Patrick Rennie (Bridgewater, Mass.) shot a first-round 89 on his way to finishing 71st overall, while Michael Stone (Lakeville, Mass.) and Ethan Bowlin (Holden, Mass.) tied for 76th for the Lancers.
Sophomores Caitlin O'Malley (Falmouth, Mass.) and Gina Bertolami took the course for the first time as collegiate golfers. O'Malley finished in 10th place, shooting 139-129-267, while Bertolami finished 11th with matching rounds of 166.
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes member colleges and universities in New England and is considered to be the oldest college golf tournament.
