Worcester, MA- After a snowy Tuesday pushed back the original game day, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (3-4, 0-0) finally make their trip west to Springfield College for a meeting with the pride to close out their early portion of their 2025 season.
Final
Worcester State: 50
Springfield College: 75
How it Happened:
The first quarter would find the Lancers with a slow start falling behind eight to nothing before junior Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) would open the scoring with a jumper halfway through the quarter. The Pride would continue to push out their lead jumping out to a double digit lead, but Waldron remained on the attack to begin working the Blue and Gold back into the action. Junior Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would add her own jumper to keep the game within easy reach, but a late run from Springfield would find the first end with a 23-6 lead for the Pride. Despite initial trailing behind, the Lancers continued to put up good defense against a strong team.
The second quarter would be another strong defensive period for the Lancers which would equally find them connecting on the offensive side of the court. They held down on defense with 10 rebounds and a strong 16 points to maintain the difference. Senior Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) and junior Neveiha Madison (Brockton, MA) would each contribute six points. Smith would hold down defense, recording seven rebounds for the Lancers. The Lancers would look to carry the complete game energy into the second half as they worked their way to a 22-39 halftime score.
The third quarter would find the Lancers off to another slow start while the Pride continued to create a bigger gap. Waldron would break their run with a good jumper slowing the Pride's momentum. At the end of the quarter, Lomonaco and junior Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) would both take advantage of their free throws trying to end this quarter on a high note for the Lancers.
The fourth quarter would find the Lancers starting off strong with 15 quick points led by Waldron, Smith, and Lomonaco. This would make the score 65-50 in favor of the Pride but with the Lancers fighting close behind. Despite a strong offensive put forth by the Lancers, they couldn't hold on defensively against this fast team.
Lomanaco would finish the game with 18 points and Alana Smith would finish with 10 rebounds.
