Gezotis, Ubele and Osburn Named to All-Worcester Area Team

Worcester, MA --- Junior Nick Gezotis (Westfield, MA), sophomore Dan Ubele (Tyngsboro, MA) and freshman Cody Osburn (Fair Oaks, MA) have all been tabbed to the Second Annual Worcester Area Baseball All-Star Team in a vote by the cities sports information directors. All three were tabbed with second-team accolades.

Despite batting injuries at the beginning of his season, Gezotis finished with a .333 batting average that included six doubles and 14 RBIs and 16 runs scored out of the lead-off spot. In his second full campaign playing at second base, Gezotis was phenomenal defensively coming just six errors in 137 chances for a fielding percentage of .956.

Gezotis was second on the team with the bases empty (.373 – 28-for-75) and he was fifth on the squad in on base percentage (.404). He also was six-for-eight on the basepaths.

Ubele, a transfer from Franklin Pierce, hit at a .318 clip with two-baggers, 19 runs and 14 runs driven in. Ubele swiped a team-best 10 bases in 12 attempts and was third on the team in total bases with 50.

As a solid third-baseman in the field, Ublele tied for the third best fielding percentage among conference starters committing just nine miscues in 113 chances (.920).

Osburn impressed in his first year as a Lancer as he earned a spot as a utility player. The first-team All-MASCAC honoree led the squad with a .397 batting average that included six doubles, three triples, 20 RBIs and 16 runs in just 73 at-bats. On the mound he fanned 13 batters in 14 innings and posted a 1-1 record with one save.

It was in the final week of the regular season that Osburn's bat helped lift the Lancers from last place to fifth in the final MASCAC standings. He batted .560 (14-for-24) with 10 runs and 11 RBIs to aid WSU in winning five of their final eight contests to close out the season.

The Lancers finished the season at 15-24 overall under the direction of head coach Dr. Dirk Baker. Baker is just eight wins shy of 400 for his career, just four full seasons after he reached the 300 victory milestone.

The Worcester Area major award winners included Anna Maria senior utility man Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) as the Player of the Year, Holy Cross junior right-hander Nate Koneski (N. Dighton, MA) as the Pitcher of the Year while Quinsigamond Community College designated hitter Dylan Pond (Hubbardston, MA) earned Rookie of the Year laurels.

Junior Shane Keddy (Worcester, MA/Worcester Tech) of Assumption and third-year Todd Tomkins (W. Haven, CT) of Becker were honored as the Co-Offensive Players of the Year. For leading the Crusaders to the Patriot League Tournament Championship, Greg DiCenzo of Holy Cross was named the Worcester Area Coach of the Year.
