Baseball Falls Twice to Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Worcester State University baseball team was swept by Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bud and Jim Hagan Field by final scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

Westfield improves to 13-1 overall, 6-0 in the MASCAC, and has won eight straight games. Worcester State falls to 8-5 and 2-2 in the MASCAC.

In game one, starter Shane Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) tossed a complete game and got all the offense he would need from a two-run home run from Ethan Day (Meriden, Conn.).

Westfield scored in each of the first three innings, getting a single run in the first, three in the second and one in the third.

Day lofted a fly ball home run to left field in the second, with Bryant Dana (Lynnfield, Mass.) coming around to score in front of him. Casey Boudreau (Shrewsbury, Mass.) followed with an RBI double later in the inning.

Bogli (W, 3-0) worked seven strong innings, scattering five hits while striking out nine. Worcester didn't get to him until the seventh inning, when Pat Galvin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) doubled home Chris Wright (Jefferson, Mass.).

Starter Sean Mahan (Woburn, Mass.) took the pitching loss for the Lancers, moving to 2-1 on the year.

Westfield kept the bats rolling in game 2, tallying two runs in the first and four in the second to jump out to a 6-1 lead.

Owls' outfielder Nick Martin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) did most of the damage at the plate, driving in one with an RBI single in the first, and plated three more with a double to centerfield in the second.

Westfield starter Pat Jordan (Reading, Mass.) worked 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts, allowing five hits and was charged with two earned runs. Vincenzo Camera (East Haven, Conn.) came on to get the final two outs in the seventh.

Martin finished 2-3 with four RBI in game two. Boudreau rapped out four hits in the doubleheader, including a double in each game.

Starter Kyle Gray (Braintree, Mass.) worked just one inning in the nightcap, allowing two runs and was charged with the loss as the Lancers used six pitchers in the game.

Lancers catcher Mike Chaves Jr. (Hudson, Mass.) rapped a solo home run in the second inning, and scored the Lancers' other run in the seventh on Zach Roberts' (Northbridge, Mass) RBI single. Roberts finished 3-3 in the nightcap.

The Lancers will return to the field on Saturday, hosting a MASCAC doubleheader against Mass. Maritime. First pitch in game one is slated for 1 p.m. from Lyons Diamond.
