Field Hockey Falls to Babson on the Road in Season Opener

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Worcester State University Field Hockey team fell 0-6 on the road against Babson College in their season opener Tuesday night at MacDowell Field.

The Lancers held the Babson Beavers to only two goals in the first half of play, as Worcester State's back end and goalkeeper defended well. Their defense did not allow anything to go by in the first 23 minutes of scrimmage.

In the 23rd minute, Babson's Victoria Spofford had an unassisted goal off of a rebound at the back post to make the score 1-0. Right as the half was adjourning, the Beavers pulled off a hard shot at the end of regulation to make the score 2-0 Babson.

The second half was a bit more of a struggle for the Lancers, as they gave up four additional goals to make the score 6-0 Beavers. Despite the six goals scored on the night, Worcester State's freshman goalie, Alison Bieksha (Hubbardston, Mass.) recorded 10 saves on the night in her 60 minutes of play.

On the offensive end, senior Taylor Lediwth (Springfield, Mass.) recorded one shot on goal, while senior Julie O'Rourke (Worcester, Mass.), freshman Lindsay Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.), and junior Megan Ripke (Feeding Hills, Mass.) each recorded a shot for the Lancers.

Next up, the Worcester State University Field Hockey team will take on Salve Regina for their second consecutive road game, Saturday, Sep. 5 at 5 p.m.
