Field Hockey Challenges Salve Regina in Road Game

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Worcester State University Lancers (0-2) field hockey team challenged the Salve Regina University Seahawks (2-1) Saturday evening at Gaudet Field, only to fall 3-1 in their second game of the season.

After a scoreless first half, both teams came out to the field hungry for a goal or two in the second.

It wasn't until the 54th minute that one team would break the naught score. With both teams raging for a scoring opportunity, the Worcester State Lancers came through and took the 1-0 gain on the Seahawks on a goal by senior Taylor Ledwith (Springfield, Mass.). The goal was shot off a penalty corner, and was assisted by seniors Megan Ripke (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Julie O'Rourke (Worcester, Mass.).

It wasn't much long after the Lancers' triumph that the Salve Regina Seahawks came back with a goal in the 59th minute to tie the score at one.

With the pressure on the line, the Seahawks stepped up and attacked the goal aggressively, scoring two more goals with 63:09 and 66:38 on the clock. This became the end result of a 3-1 loss for the Worcester State Lancers.

Despite Salve Regina taking 17 shots on the Lancers' end, Worcester State finished the game with a higher shot percentage on the offensive end with .200, in comparison to the Seahawk's .176.

Freshman goalie Alison Bieksha (Hubbardston, Mass.) recorded the loss for the Lancers. Bieksha (0-2) conquered seven saves on the night.

The Worcester State field hockey team will remain on the road next week as they face off against Anna Maria College on Sep. 10, and then Keene State on Sep. 12.
