Ice Hockey Falls In MASCAC Road Match Against Salem State, 3-2

Salem, MA --- Salem State junior Mark Macdonald (Norwell, MA) scored twice to help lead the Vikings to a 3-2 decision over the Worcester State on Saturday afternoon.

The victory gives the Salem State a 7-4-1 record in the MASCAC and ups their overall mark to 10-7-1. The loss drops the Lancers to 3-8-1 in-conference, and 6-11-1 on the season.

Worcester State jumped on top 12:45 into the first period when sophomore Vinny Bohn (Spring Hill, FL) connected with a wrist shot from five feet out to put the Lancers up 1-0. Senior Tim Bowman (Moorpark, CA) and freshman Mike Leskun (Geneva, IL) were credited with assists.

The Lancers carried the 1-0 lead into the second until Salem State appeared to score twice before Macdonald finally swatted the puck into the back of the net for good.

Macdonald followed up with his second goal of the period with a shot from the circle that went by WSU's goaltender. Freshman Stephen McManus (Westwood, MA) and sophomore Kristofer Faric (Whitby, ON) assisted Macdonald on the eventual match cliniching goal.

Salem State made it a 3-1 game halfway through the third when Bucci scored his third goal of the year after being setup by third-year Kyle Phelan (Barnstable, MA) and Faric.

However, the Blue and Gold cut the deficit to a goal when Leskun scored with just under ten minutes remaining in the third, but the Vikings picked up their defense and made the final score stand at 3-2.

Salem State took 41 shots while Worcester put 28 on net. The Vikings had led 33-13 after two periods.

The Vikings third-year netminder Ryan Sutliffe (Las Vegas, NV) made 26 saves, including a stellar diving save to post the win, while junior goalie Taylor Fant (Denver, CO) stopped 38 for Worcester State.

Salem State will face-off next at home against St. Anslem's on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.  Worcester State's next game will be on Thursday night at 7:30 PM at UMass-Dartmouth.
