Ice Hockey Edged by Assumption, 2-1

Auburn, MA --- Assumption scored a pair of unanswered goals in the final two periods en route to a 2-1 victory over Worcester State in non-conference men's ice hockey action this evening at Horgan Memorial Rink.

After a scoreless first period Worcester State (6-14-2) was finally able to light the lamp when sophomore RJ Byrne (Marlboro, MA) registered his first goal of the season when he was able to lift a rebounded shot over the left shoulder of the Greyhound net minder at 4:53 of the second for the 1-0 advantage.

Classmate Brenton Dyok (Rocklin, CA) and first-year Cody Brier (Marlboro, MA) assisted on the play.

However, with just 27 ticks left in the period Assumption (7-15-2) knotted the score at 1-1 when sophomore Trevor Plante (Blackstone, MA) found the back of the net with assists from fellow second-year Matt Dalton (Medway, MA) and freshman Trevor Loiseau (S. Grafton, MA).

The Greyhounds continued to maintain the momentum as senior Keven Meehan (Melrose, MA) broke the tie as he connected on his seventh goal of the campaign at the 6:56 mark for the 2-1 advantage.

Junior classmates Mike Heyde (Natick, MA) and Kyle Zobler (Millbury, MA) registered helpers on the goal.

The Lancers had their opportunities down the stretch as junior Curtis Martin (Okotos, Alberta) let loose on a one timer from the blue line with 3:30 remaining in regulation only to be denied when freshman goalkeeper Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, CT) made an incredible glove save, falling backwards to preserve the lead for Assumption.

Then with just under one minute to play third-year Derek Serbon (Crown Point, IN) rang the far post with his wrist shot from the point.

Hemhauser turned aside 29 of the 30 shots that he saw in 58 minutes of action for the Greyhounds. WSU freshman Drew Case (Plano, TX) recorded 21 saves in the loss for the Lancers.

Both teams were unsuccessful with the extra man advantage as Assumption went 0-for-5 and Worcester State was 0-for-4.

Worcester State has a short turnaround as they travel to Plymouth State on Thursday night for a 6 PM contest and Assumption returns home on Saturday to take on Stonehill at 4:35 PM.
