Ice Hockey Earns First Conference Win Against Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. –The Worcester State University Lancers earned their first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win over the Fitchburg State University Falcons Saturday afternoon at the Wallace Center. The Lancers won a 4-1 decision in Sterling Cup action to improve their record to 4-10-1 (1-7-1 MASCAC).

 

Worcester State opened the scoring just one minute into the contest as freshman forward Patrick Germain converted a break away attempt, firing a shot into the top left corner of the net for his fourth marker on the year on an assist from classmate Mike Moran for the 1-0 margin after one period of play.

 

In the middle stanza, the Lancers doubled their lead (2-0) at the 3:23 mark when senior Ryan Menard deposited the puck inside the near post for the unassisted tally one his first goal of the season.

 

The Green and Gold cut into the deficit 19 seconds later as senior forward Max Lorenzen gathered a feed from classmate Ryan Connolly and junior Jon Johannesson and struck for his first marker on the season to make the score 2-1.

 

In the final period of play, Worcester State upped its lead at the 5:25 mark when junior forward Alex DeWitz collected a loose puck of a face off and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net for his second score of the year for the 3-1 advantage.

 

The Lancers added an insurance marker with just under two and half minutes remaining in the contest as junior Nicholas Drill received a pass from Moran and buried a shot into the back of the net for his firth score on the year, resulting in the 4-1 final.

 

Throughout the contest, Worcester State held a commanding 40-17 advantage in shots, while the Falcons went 0-for4 with the man advantage. In between the pipes, senior Corey McMahon posted 36 saves for Fitchburg State in 58:05 minutes of action, while freshman Max Kirkwood turned away 16 shots for the Lancers in the complete game effort.

 

Fitchburg State (7-8-1, 4-4-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Vikings of Salem State University for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Worcester State (4-10-1, 1-7-1 MASCAC) will host the Owls of Westfield State University on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
