Softball Stymied by Scots

WENHAM, Mass. – A day after erupting for 34 hits and 26 runs, the Worcester State University softball team was held in check by Gordon College, as the Scots swept a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

Gordon (11-10) won the opening game of the doubleheader 3-1 and then collected a 3-0 shutout in the second game to drop the Lancers to 9-11.

Game 1: Gordon 3, Worcester State 1

Worcester State got off on the right foot with a run in the top of the first on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Emma Lanpher (Charlton, Mass.), but they couldn't manage much more against Gordon pitcher Mara Little (Port Deposit, Md.).

Little (5-5) went the distance, striking out four and allowing just one run on five hits and no walks.

Her counterpart Molly Glynn (Abington, Mass.) gave up three runs, but only one was earned over three innings of work. Emily Bartlett (Lowell, Mass.) threw three perfect innings of relief with one strikeout.

Lanpher was 1-2 with a double, while Bartlett was 1-3 at the plate and scored the lone run of the day for the Lancers.

Lauren Dube (Leominster, Mass.) and Rachel Sinclair (Westminster, Mass.) also doubled in the game.

Game 2: Gordon 3, Worcester State 0

Bartlett dueled with Gordon sophomore Sierra Ricci (Greene, R.I.) and the teams went to the fifth scoreless, but the Scots scratched out a run on an RBI single to center field by Arianna Ramsaran (Johnson City, Tenn.) to take the lead. They plated two more in the sixth on a double by Ami Rivera (Concord, N.H.) and a single by Lily Rivera (Concord, N.H.) to knock in her sister.

Sinclair doubled for the second game in a row, but the Lancers mustered just four hits against Ricci, who struck out seven in the complete game shutout, improving to 6-4.

Bartlett falls to 4-5 in the circle. She struck out three and surrendered three runs on six hits over five and a third. Sarah Gosselin (Charlton, Mass.) got the final two outs of the sixth, one via the strikeout.

Worcester State gears up for a return to MASCAC play on Saturday afternoon, with a 12:00 pm home doubleheader against MCLA.
