Women's Soccer Blanks Fitchburg State, 3-0

Worcester, MA --- Junior Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA) notched a goal and an assist to help lead Worcester State to a 3-0 triumph this morning in MASCAC women's soccer action at Coughlin Field.

With the victory the Lancers (8-5-4, 4-1-2 MASCAC) have earned a home game as the #2 seed in the first round of the conference tournament as they will take on third-seeded Westfield State on Wednesday at 7 PM. Fitchburg State ends their 2010 campaign at 9-8-1 with a 3-4 record against MASCAC opponents.

Worcester State got off to a strong start when freshman Brittany Rotatori (Auburn, MA) sent in her second goal of the season on a pass from Clifford in the eighth minute. WSU would have several good opportunities to score, but the Fitchburg State back line kept them off the board and junior keeper Melanie Berent (W. Hartford, CT) collected six of her seven saves in the stanza.

First-year Kathleen Smith (Rehoboth, MA) made the score 2-0 to open the second frame with an unassisted marker and then Clifford tacked on her goal with less than three minutes to go in the game to help lead the Blue and Gold to the triumph.

Senior teammates Rachael Armenti (W. Boylston, MA) and Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, MA) combined to amass three saves in the shutout as they each split halves in the win.

Worcester State outshot the visitors 15-7 and the Lancers held a slim 3-2 lead in corners.

Junior Hannah Mitchell (Hopedale, MA) also recorded the contests only teams save for the Falcons as she made a spectacular effort to kick a ball out of the open net and preserve the scoreless game early on in the contest.

Armenti along with classmates Sarah Connors (Gardner, MA), Kara Rogato (N. Andover, MA) and Toni DeAngelo (Lowell, MA) were honored on "Senior Day" for playing in their final home contest in a ceremony before the game.
