Women’s Tennis Wins Third Straight with 6-3 Triumph over Western Connecticut

DANBURY, Conn. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team won its third straight win as they downed the Western Connecticut State University Colonials by a score of 6-3 Tuesday afternoon.

THE MATCH

Despite Western Connecticut opening with an 8-1 No. 1 doubles win over Worcester State's Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.), the Lancers came back with 8-1 and 8-4 wins at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, to head into singles play ahead 2-1. Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) improved to 3-0 as doubles partners this season with the 8-1 win at the No. 2 spot.

 

Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and Alves began singles play with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 wins over Western Connecticut's Clare Callahan (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Sarah Warkoski (Bristol, Conn.), respectively. Western Connecticut came back with two wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Emma Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) and Carole Allers (Wilton, Conn.) defeated Taylor and Khafaga, respectively, bringing the score to 4-3 in the Lancers' favor. Rookie Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) clinched the match at the No. 6 singles spot as she defeated Lesley Coronel (Danbury, Conn.) 6-3, 7-5. Silk wrapped up play at the No. 3 spots she had a lengthy match against Lianne Maynard (Milford, Conn.) with set scores of 0-6, 7-6, and 10-2.  

 

COACHES CORNER

Head coach Courteney Blais commented on Mularski's match clinch, "It was great to see Monika close the match as a rookie with some pressure riding on her. She stayed calm and cool and got the job done."

"Rachel flexed her veteran muscles and had a quick match followed by Dominique dominating her singles match too," mentioned Blais.  

 

UP NEXT

The women's tennis team continues their journey on the road Thursday (Sep. 28) when they head to Roger Williams for a 4 p.m. match.
