Worcester State 14, Gordon 9
Port Charlotte, FL - The Worcester State College baseball team
squandered an 8 run lead and 5 innings of no hit pitching by
Bob DeVito (Webster, MA) but managed to put up 6
runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Gordon College
Fighting Scots, 14-9, Monday afternoon in Port Charlotte. The
Lancers improve to 3-4 on the year, while Gordon fell to 0-1.
The Lancers scored a pair of runs in the second inning and six in
the top of the 6th to take an, 8-0, lead. DeVito was spinning a gem
on the hill for the Lancers as he threw 5-plus hitless innings
before relinquishing a double by Gordon College’s
Aaron Whittet in the bottom of the 6th frame.
Gordon scored two runs in the 6th and 7th innings before adding
four in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game at, 8-8.
In the top of the 10th inning, after Ryan Raleigh
(Cranston, RI) led off the inning with a walk, the Lancers strung
together 5 straight bunts including a pair of RBI squeeze bunts by
Nick Dortona (Revere, MA) and Ryan
LaPrade (Leominster, MA) to give Worcester State the lead.
Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA) followed with a
bases loaded single that Gordon College threw away that resulted in
the bases clearing an Abbascia standing on third base. Catcher
Chris Logan (Spencer, MA) singled home Abbascia
with the final Lancer run of the game.
The Lancers banged out 14 hits on the day led by senior
Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) who was 3-for-6.
Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA), Johno Hinkell
(N. Adams, MA) and Joe Regan (Shrewsbury, MA) each
added 2 hits. Whittet paced Gordon with a three hit day.
Sophomore Kevin Hayes (Medford, MA) got the win in
relief for Worcester State. Andrew Zgrablich took
the loss for Gordon.
