Russell Nabs D3football Team of the Week Honor

Worcester, MA --- Worcester State senior Tyler Russell (Princeton, MA) has been selected as one of three linebackers to this week's D3football.com Team of the Week after he helped lead the Lancers to a homecoming win over Fitchburg State on Saturday

Russell finished with a game-best 19 tackles (eight solo) which included 3.5 tackles for a loss, a sack and a forced fumble as the Blue and Gold defeated the Falcons 41-6.

Russell has had an incredible season for WSU as he has posted totals of 153 tackles (81 solo) to go along with 12.5 TFL, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in just nine contests. He also has added three pass breakups and a pair of hurries.

Russell currently ranks first in the NCAA Division III in solo tackles while he is second in total tackles and average (17.00) as he is ten off of leader Kyle McGivney of Luther College. Russell is also tied for 67th nationally in average tackles for a loss per game (1.39).

Russell is the second Worcester State player to be named to the D3football.com team of the week as sophomore Graham Asum (Marlboro, MA) received the nod when he intercepted four passes on September 25 in a win against Westfield State.

The 5-4 Lancers under the direction of 28th year head coach Brian Cullen look to close out their 2010 with a win against Framingham State on Saturday at noon. If the Blue and Gold are victorious they will have posted their first winning season since 2004.
