Plymouth State Rallies Past Field Hockey in Overtime Thriller

Worcester, MA --- Senior Kerry D’Ambroise (Lowell, MA) netted the decisive marker seven minutes into overtime to help propel Plymouth State University to a 2-1 victory over Worcester State in Little East field hockey action this evening at Coughlin Stadium.

With the win the Panthers improve to 9-6 and even out to 5-5 in the Little East while the Lancers slip to 3-14 and 0-10 in the conference.

WSC took control of the game early on as they had their best look to score nine minutes into the contest. PSU sophomore keeper Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, NH) was on the ground on the left side of the cage when sophomore Kaitlyn Delisle (Taunton, MA) tried to get it on the right side, but senior Lindsey Hiltz (Manchester, NH) stopped the ball in its tracks to keep Worcester State off the board.

WSC stayed on the offensive and scored at 10:37 when sophomore Sarah Cozzens (Lancaster, MA) took a cross from the middle of the striking circle from senior Lesley Hill (Raynham, MA).

For the remainder of the period Plymouth State controlled the tempo of the frame as they outshot the Lancers 8-1 over the last 23 minutes with three shots coming on goal. All other shots went wide of the net.

The Panthers continued to apply pressure as they kept the ball on Worcester State’s side of the field for the second stanzas first 10 minutes. PSU had five corners and seven shots, but the Lancers did a good job of neutralizing the attack as two of those shots were blocked by the defense and sophomore keeper Katherine Masterjohn (Warren, MA) stopped a pair of shots.

After a WSC shot at the 45 minute mark, Plymouth State retained possession as they fired away four shots in a three minute span, but their two shots on goal were rejected by Masterjohn.

The two teams traded corners with 55 minutes off the clock and following a Panther timeout senior Sarah Smith (Lexington, MA) sent in the equalizing tally at 62:12 on an unassisted goal.

In the extra session Plymouth State picked up right where they left off and made Masterjohn work for a pair of saves before D’Ambroise knocked home her team-leading 10th goal of the season to give the Panthers the victory.

PSU outshot Worcester State 30-7 (14-6 on goal) and held an 11-3 lead in penalty corners. Plymouth State dominated both categories starting in the second stanza as they had a 20-2 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corners.

Masterjohn stopped 12 shots as she shouldered the loss while Sedgley collected four saves. Hiltz’s early save was the third team defensive save of the season for PSU.

The Lancers will entertain Nichols in a 7 PM contest on Wednesday while Plymouth State ventures to Springfield for a 6 o’clock matchup.
