Field Hockey Uses Three Late Goals to Blank Anna Maria, 3-0

Worcester State 3, Anna Maria 0

Worcester, MA --- Senior Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, MA) helped spark a late scoring output with the game-winning goal as Worcester State University defeated Anna Maria College this evening 3-0 in non conference field hockey action at Coughlin Field.

With the win the Lancers improved their record to 2-3 while the AMCATS fall to 1-4.

Both teams battled an onslaught of heavy rain throughout the duration of the contest. After a scoreless first half, Rotondi led the charge for the Blue and Gold when she found the back of the net off of a rebounded defensive save by sophomore Michelle Blackler (Ashland, MA). Rotondi's second marker of the season was sent in at 54:06.

Worcester State scored again 10 minutes later when junior Lauren Daley (Dedham, MA) fired a rocket for her first career tally off a penalty corner pass on the outside from senior Amanda Maillet (Saugus, MA).

The Lancers notched their final goal with 1:01 left on the clock as sophomore Ally Valencia (Foxboro, MA) shot in a short cross from junior Molly Cotter (N. Easton, MA).

For the first 55 minutes of the game, Anna Maria's defense held Worcester State in check with a stout defensive effort, led by senior keeper Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, MA/Burncoat), who would end the game with 23 saves. WSU would finish with a 39-2 lead in shots and a 23-2 edge in penalty corners.

Worcester State junior Kat Masterjohn (Warren, MA) was only called upon to make one stop in her second shutout of the year.

Blackler notched a pair of defensive saves for Anna Maria while senior Mary Anne McLaughlin (Wallingford, CT) also recorded one in the opening stanza.

Both teams will continue their respective league schedules on Saturday afternoon road games. Worcester State heads north to face off against Fitchburg State in a 10 AM LEC game while the AMCATS travel east to take on Gordon in a 1 PM CCC game.
