UMass Dartmouth Uses Strong Second Half To Defeat Field Hockey, 7-3

Worcester, MA --- UMass Dartmouth sophomore Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI) and junior teammates Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA) and Jenna Miedzionoski (Beverly, MA) each registered two markers apiece to help  the Corsairs defeat Worcester State, 7-3, in Little East Conference field hockey action this evening at Coughlin Field.

The Lancers (6-3, 2-2 LEC) originally had the 2-0 advantage just 12 minutes into the contest when they scored twice on tallies by senior Samantha Janda (Sterling, MA) and classmate Sarah Cozzens (Lancaster, MA).

Following a timeout by the Corsairs (4-4, 3-1 LEC), the visitors built the momentum of a goal by Miedzionoski at the 13:44 mark and then Dolce found the back of the net to knot the score 2-2 with 2:16 remaining in the period.

UMass Dartmouth would come out of the intermission on fire as they erupted for four goals in a span of 17 minutes. Taylor and Dolce scored three minutes apart to ignite the offense and then sophomore Aubrie Brault (New Bedford, MA) and Taylor would then pot markers 90 seconds apart for the 6-2 Corsair edge at the 52:10 mark.

Cozzens would help stop the bleeding when she scored exactly two minutes later before the Corsairs completed the games scoring on Miedzionoski's final tally with 9:21 left to play in the contest.

Both teams were even in shots (13-13), but it was UMD who held the 9-6 lead in corners – five of which were converted for goals.

Sophomore Kelsey Gallo (E. Greenwhich, RI) recorded five stops between the pipes for UMass Dartmouth while junior Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, MA) collected one save in the loss.

Junior Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA) dished helpers on Miedzionoski's first goal that ended the first half and she helped start the rally with the game-winner on Taylor's marker that led off the second half.

With her two goals tonight, Cozzens now has 11 to lead the team. The school record is 16, which is shared by four others including Lancer Hall of Famer Patti Provost. Senior Lauren Daley (Dedham, MA) also recorded her squad-best fourth defensive save this evening.

Both squads will continue LEC play on Saturday. Worcester State travels to Bridgewater State for a 12 PM contest while UMass Dartmouth will entertain Salem State at 4 o'clock.
