Worcester, MA- After a thrilling sweep yesterday over conference foes Fitchburg State, the Lancer Baseball team (8-20, 7-8) returned to action this afternoon to take on nationally ranked Salve Regina in a mid week, out-of-conference, battle. While attempting to rest themselves up for the remainder of the conference regular season, Worcester State looked to test themselves against some tough competition.
Final
Worcester State:10
Salve Regina: 28
How it Happened:
Worcester would look to get things going quickly, but the Seahawks pitcher was tight in the first, striking out the first two batters and after a walk, forced a ground out to wrap up the Worcester at bat. Starting on the mound for Worcester would be first year Dylan White (Rutland, MA), who would quickly grab out number one, but Salve Regina was primed for contact, scoring six quick runs before Worester could grab outs two and three to get out of the first. Things went much smoother in the second, while failing to score a run, White made quick work of his next Seahawk batters, taking them down 1-2-3.
The third inning would be a repeat by half of the first as Salve would snag three more runs to push their lead to 9-0. The fourth inning would see first year Franklin Sierra (Boston, MA) step in to take on pitching duties and an early error in right field would put the first runner on, with a follow up walk, would see two runners on the bag. This would set the Seahawks up for a big inning recording five runs before the first out would be called. Junior Jarrett Morrill (Chelmsford, MA) would be called to the mound to relieve Sierra. One more run would come across before out number two was claimed followed by an additional two runs for Salve as the Lancers looked for the third out. One more run would come across the plate before Worcester was able to attempt their revenge in the top of the fifth with the score sitting at 19-0.
Worcester would be shut out of the scoring in the fifth while Salve Regina would record an additional four runs in the bottom of the inning before Worcester would record their first runs of the game as first year Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA) would score off a first year Reymi Medina (Lawrence, MA) double. Junior Andrew Medina (Boston, MA) would cross for run number off a Joe Auger double while a home run by sophomore Aaron Siegel (Abington, MA) would see all three come home and Worcester with five runs. Senior Colin Fitzgerald (Auburn, MA) would follow this up with a two run homer of his own to see the score settle a 23-7 with just one out on the board. Doyle would grab his second run of the inning as Worcester began to power their way back into the game with an eight run sixth.
The Seahawks would claim one run back in the bottom of the inning, but the Lancers defense was rejuvenated from the top of the inning and tightened up their defense to shut them down quickly. The seventh inning would be quiet for the Lancers but see another four runs from Salve, but Worcester would not sit quiet as they recorded two runs, this time sophomore Jack Pawlich (Rocky Hill, CT) would come home off an Auger double while Reymi Medina would score on a wild pitch the score moved to 28-10.
Evan Samsel would come in for the bottom of the eight for sophomore Nolan Turner (Barnstable, MA) to close the inning and hopefully set the stage for a Worcester comeback in the ninth, grabbing three quick outs to give Worcester a fighting chance in the top of the ninth. The Lancers would get two on base quick on a hit by pitch and walk but the Seahawks would close out the game with quick outs and claim the 28-10 victory.
What's Next:
