Mass. Maritime:9
Game 2
Worcester State:3
Mass. Maritime:7
How it Happened:
Lancers would be off to a strong start as their defense prevented any runs from getting on the board for the Buccaneers, however Mass. Maritime would be just as strong on the defense end as the first, second and third innings would be scoreless innings for both teams. We would not see the scoreboard opened up until the bottom of the fourth inning. A double to left by junior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA), who would be brought home by a single from sophomore Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) to put the first run on the board.
The top of the fifth inning Mass. Maritime would score three runs bringing the score to 3-1 and prevent Worcester State from scoring any more runs. The top of the sixth inning, Mass. Maritime would score a two run homer, followed by two solo homers for a 7-1 score.
The bottom of the sixth would find the Lancers trying to bridge the gap. A wild pitch to first year Jack Savio (Andover, MA) would give grad student Ben Smith (Bourne, MA) the opportunity to sneak in a run. Iamarone would double to the left side while Savio would bring it home 7-3. The top of the seventh inning, Buccaneers would score two more runs leaving the Lancers unable to make a comeback in the remaining innings despite their efforts, falling 9-3.
The second game of the day would be off to a quicker start as Mass. Maritime scored two runs within the top of the first inning and would keep up a strong defense preventing Worcester State from catching up. The second inning would be a scoreless inning for both teams. The bottom of the third inning, Lancers would have a loaded base and a single by sophomore Ryan Jewitt (Natick, MA) would bring senior Iamarone (Providence, R.I.) home for their first run of the game 2-1.
The fourth, fifth, and sixth innings would keep the scoreboard unchanged for both teams. The top of the seventh, Mass. Maritime would manage to score another run, increasing the pressure on the Lancers and with bases loaded they would get a grand slam for a 7-1 score. The bottom of the seventh, Lancers would score their second run of the game from a solo homer by first year Christopher Mondesir (Roslindale, MA). A single to shortstop by Jewitt would send Iamarone home bringing in the third run of the game for the Lancers. The Lancers would be unable to bridge the gap caused by the Buccaneers, falling 7-3.
