Field Hockey Falls To Westfield State, 1-0

Westfield, MA --- Junior Ali Feldman (Manchester, CT) scored the game-winning goal (Franklin, MA) to lead Westfield State to a 1-0 victory over Worcester State in Little East conference field hockey action this afternoon.

The Owls boosted their overall record to 10-3 with their fourth straight victory and are 5-3 in conference play. Worcester is 7-7 on the season and 3-5 in league play.

Feldman scored the game winner, her first goal this season, 8:31 into the game on a scramble in front of the net.

Westfield and Worcester both recorded eight first-half shots, but the Lancers picked up the pace in the second stanza, outshooting the Owls, 14-8.

Senior Andrea McCarthy responded well to the shot barrage as she registered nine of her saves in the second half, including a stop on a breakaway at the midpoint of the second half and a glove save in the closing seconds.

Blue and Gold net-minder Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, MA) made four stops in the losing effort.

WSU had overall advantage in shots for the contest (22-16), shots on goal (13-5) and a slight edge in penalty corners (9-8).

Both teams' next game will be on Wednesday.  The Lancers will travel to take on Southern Maine at 3:30 PM, while the Owls will host Little East rival Keene State at 7 o'clock.
