Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Colby

Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Colby

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Men's basketball team (1-1, 0-0) heads off on their first overnight trip of the season this weekend with a jaunt up to Colby College to take on the Mules in the Colby Tip-off tournament. The Lancers will then take on the winner of the UMaine-Farmington and Augusta battle tomorrow.

Final

Worcester State: 72

Colby: 82

How it Happened:

The scoring would be in slow supply to start this morning game as each team slowly got themselves woken up into the action. The Mules would claim an early 6-0 lead that would keep them in the lead through the first half as Worcester chipped away at the deficit, closing it down to within a single point halfway through the opening half. A late surge in the final 10 minutes would see Colby push their lead out to 16 points before free throws from sophomore Jaylen Kirkland (Gardner, MA) would begin to reset the scoring for Worcester. While the Lancers would still see themselves down 43-27 at halftime, looking to continue grabbing baskets in the second.

Baskets were claimed in the second half, but for the early run it was all Mules as they ballooned their lead to 28 before a free from junior Ayme Daguilh (West Boylston, MA) would record the first point almost four minutes into the fresh 20 minutes. The Lancers and Mules would begin trading baskets back and forth as Worcester slowly dug into the Colby lead. The Lancers would get themselves within eight, but Colby managed to just hold them off in the final two minutes to claim the 82-72 first game victory.

Daguilh would lead Worcester with 21 points in the action to go along with four rebounds, while senior Suubu Nkugwa would record 16 points with four rebounds and five assists.
