Men's Golf Opens Season with Victory over Emmanuel

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's golf team opened up the 2021 season in the win column on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Emmanuel College 348-409 in a non-conference dual match at Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course.

It was the first time Worcester State men's golf took to the course in 541 days, as the entire Spring and Fall 2020 seasons were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lancers last teed off on October 21, 2019 for the second round of the NEIGA Championships.

Worcester State was led by graduate student Connor Anderson (Raynham, Mass.), who took home medalist honors after shooting a nine-over 79. After shooting a 43 on the front nine, Anderson reeled it in with a one-over 36 on the back nine, which included a birdie on the par-three 12th.

First-year Patrick Rennie (Bridgewater, Mass.) looked sharp in his first collegiate match, posting an 88 on the afternoon. Junior Jake Poitras (Harwich, Mass.) followed close behind Rennie with a score of 90, while classmate Will Sjogren (Auburn, Mass.) posted a 91. Rounding out Worcester State's scores was first-year Marc Melanson (Natick, Mass.), who carded a 107.

Emmanuel was led by junior Michael Mencio (Watertown, Conn.) and senior William Richter (Oxford, Conn.), who posted identical scores of 93 on the day. Senior captain Jacson Mooers (Lincolnville, Maine) turned in a score of 107, while junior Mike Kokoros (Braintree, Mass.) rounded out the scores with a 116.

The Lancers will return to the course a week from Thursday when they travel to Westfield State for a MASCAC dual match. First tee time from Tekoa Country Club is slated for 10 a.m.
