Lancers Drop Back and Forth Battle to Bison

Lancers Drop Back and Forth Battle to Bison

Worcester, MA- The Lancers came into the contest off a 3-5 conference win over MCLA this past Saturday, as they headed to Burrillville, RI to take on the Nichols Bison in the postponed WooCup Consolation matchup. Nichols, coming off a loss of their own, had a 2-5 record as both teams looked to have a solid midweek win before important conference games later in the week.

The game's opening minutes would see numerous shots from both teams, but junior Jakub Kubik (Uherske Hradiste, Czech Republic) had to see a bit more pressure on his end of ice as the Lancers defense unified to prevent the Bison offensive from gaining ground. The first period would see two goals scored, one from each of the opponents on the ice. Sophomore Anders Grogstand (Royal Oak, Michigan) would be the first goal scorer for the Lancers as he tucked in a pass from junior defensemen Christian Phinney (Draper, UT) would add his name to the points sheet contributing with an assist off a cleared pass from Kubik who would be credited with the second assist on the Lancers tying goal after an earlier Nichols score.

The Lancers looked to find their way back into the game after tying the game up and spent a majority of the period peppering the Bison defense with attempts on the cage. A last-minute goal by Nichols with just under a minute to go in the period would add some added incentive to the third period action for the Lancers.

The third period would open up with junior Cody Procello (Melrose, MA) getting numerous shots on frame as the Lancers looked to even the slate. The Lancers would have a player sent to the sin bin minutes after a positive opening spell. The Lancers would survive being a man down and showed excellent positional discipline after the Bison attempted numerous offensive shifts in their attempt to find a goal to extend the lead. The Lancers and Bison would exchange spells of dominance until the Lancers got a power play of their own. Within a minute of the power play, Grogstand would get his second of the day.  Nichols would unfortunately score a goal with about 3 minutes left as the Lancers went into an aggressive attack mode for the lead. With the scoreline dropping to 3-2 forced the Lancers to pull Kubik in favor of a 6th skater in the attacking zone. The Bison would manage to possess the puck through the bodies and send it sliding down the ice into the net to see the game end 4-2.

The Lancers now sit at (3-6-0, 3-4-0) while Nichols moves to (3-5-2, 2-4-2). The Lancers will take away numerous positives from this match as they prepare for a conference match with Framingham State on Thursday, December 7th, when they host Framingham State for a 7pm puck drop.
