Men's Soccer, Southern Maine Tie 1-1 In Double-Overtime

Worcester, MA --- Southern Maine sophomore Kyle Curley's (Gorham, ME) marker in the 70th minute helped pace the visiting Huskies to a 1-1 draw in double overtime with Worcester State this afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action.

Following a scoreless opening frame that saw the Lancers (1-3-1) lead in shots, 8-5, senior Derek Alves (Ludlow, MA) helped the hosts break through and take over the 1-0 margin with a penalty kick in the 58th minute.

Southern Maine (1-4-1), however, came back and equalized the score 12 minutes later taking advantage of a corner kick.

After junior Kevin MacConnell (Vaezie, ME) found himself with the ball on the left side of the field, he sent a long cross to the near side to Curley, who finished in front of the net for his first collegiate tally to knot up the score at 1-1.

Both squads nearly won it for their side in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

WSU senior Kyle Venne (Ludlow, MA) had a beautiful header in the 79th minute, but it was diagnosed perfectly by freshman keeper Charles Mull (Portland, ME) who snatched it in mid-air.

Junior netminder Tim Schmidt (Southwick, MA) also made an excellent read and turned aside a shot by USM senior Tyler Rand (Westbrook, ME), who had a good look on the left side of the box with eight minutes to go.

In the extra session, Schmidt scooped up a bid by junior Harrison Hall (Kennebunkport, ME) in the 91st minute before Mull preserved the contest by stonewalling sophomore Steven Julius (Ashby, MA) on a breakaway from the right side of the net in the second overtime.

WSU led in shots (18-12) and corners (8-1). Mull collected six saves in the draw while Schmidt dotted the ledger with four of his own.

Both teams host non-conference foes in the next week. Worcester State takes on Keene State at 7 PM on Wednesday as Southern Maine takes on Thomas on Monday in a 4 o'clock matchup.
