Sliwoski, Johnson Earn Accolades At ECAC Division III Championships

 

Rensselaer, NY --- Sophomore Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) tallied 6,077 points in the decathlon and classmate Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) had a leap of sixth in the high jump as they both helped the Worcester State men's track & field team tie for 30th out of 63 teams at the ECAC Division III Championships.

Bates won the meet with 61 points as the Lancers with 11 points had the fourth-highest finish for an Alliance school and the second-best MASCAC finish for a meet that included Division III competition from New England, New York and the Mid-Atlantic regions. 

In a field that included 12 competators, Sliwoski broke the 6,000 point barrier for the first-time this season as he took home first in the shot put (11.68m/38-4), the top spot in the discus (39.44m/129-5), second in the javelin (45.95m/150-9) and fourth in the pole vault (3.61m/11-10).

He also added fifth in the 100 meters (11.76), sixth in the long jump (6.05m/), 110 meter hurdles (16.33) and 400 meters (52.84), a tie for sixth in the high jump (1.76m/) and he also placed 9th in the 1,500 (5:06.35).

Sliwoski's point total in the decathlon is the 26th-best score in Division III this outdoor season.

Johnson improved on both his height and finish from last season as a freshman to earn repeat All-ECAC laurels with sixth (1.96m/6-5). In 2011 at Moravian, Johnson cleared eighth overall (1.86m/6-1.25).

Other solid times included the 4x100 meter relay team which consisted of freshman Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty), sophomores Luke Curtis (Dudley, MA) and Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA) along with junior Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) that placed ninth out of 35 entries with a time of 42.81.

First-year Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) was also 14th in the 200 (22.24) as Truong added 22nd in the 110 meter hurdles (16.58). Junior Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA) and sophomore Kevin Maciel (Tewksbury, MA) both finished 13th (55.29) and 14th (55.58), respectively, in the 400 meter hurdles.

The 4x400 meter relay of Parrella, Maciel, Rafael and third-year Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) rounded out the group with a time of 3:22.23 in 16th.

This meet concludes the season for the men's outdoor track and field team.
