Danbury, CT --- Cortney Romyns
(Newton, NJ) went 5-for-6 with three home runs and six runs batted
in and the Western Connecticut State University softball team swept
a doubleheader from Worcester State College, 11-2 and 17-6 in two
mercy-rule shortened affairs at Westside Field Thursday night.
In the opener, WestConn put six runs on the board in the bottom of
the second inning. Romyns led off the inning with her second
home run of the season, a deep drive over the wall in right center.
Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, CT) added a
two-RBI triple and later scored on a bunt single by
Kristen Lugovich (West Haven, CT)
to close out the scoring.
The Lancers got on the scoreboard when Veronica
Clark (Worcester, MA) pounded her first home run of the
season, a two-run shot over the wall in left center.
Heather Camara (North Dighton, MA) scored
ahead of Clark after leading off the inning with a single.
Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) and Romyns
hit home runs in the bottom of the fourth. DiMaggio's was a
two-run homer to the opposite field and Romyns, her second of the
game, was a line drive down the left field line, a three-run
blast.
Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst, NY) went the distance
for the Colonials. She allowed two runs on four hits and
struck out five.
Danielle Caron (Peabody, MA) dropped to 0-4 on the
season after allowing 11 runs, 10 of them earned while striking out
one and walking three.
In the nightcap, Worcester State scored an unearned run in the top
of the first inning. Ashley Loomer
(Pepperell, MA) reached on an error and eventually scored on a pass
ball.
The Colonials took advantage of three Lancers' errors in the
second. They scored six runs on five hits, two of those
following doubles by Romyns and Meghan Mammone
(Stamford, CT).
The teams each scored three runs in the third inning. The
Lancers scored three unearned runs off Colonials' starter and
winner Brittany Conners (Waterford, CT).
WestConn went back up by five, 9-4, after RBI doubles from
Connors and Amy Hartman (Ellington, CT).
Romyns and Mammone added two-run home runs in the Colonials
eight-run, 10-hit fourth inning.
Worcester State scored two runs in the top of the fifth on
RBI singles from Katherine Prior (Charlton, MA)
and Loomer.
Connors, 1-0, went the distance and allowed six runs, two of them
earned on 10 hits while striking out three and walking three.
WestConn hosts University of Southern Maine in a doubleheader on
Saturday, weather permitting. First pitch is a 12 p.m.
