Game 1 --- Box Score

Fort Myers, FL --- Despite a one-hit shutout by junior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA), Worcester State dropped a 1-0 setback to Curry before they rebounded with a 4-0 triumph over Amherst (2-2).

The Colonels (1-1) pushed across the only run of the game in the top of the third inning. Junior Sarah Velezis (Waterbury, CT) drew a lead-off walk and she moved into scoring position on a ground out to the pitcher. With two outs in the inning, senior Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, MA) drove in Velezis when she belted a single to left. Mahoney would induce a pop-up to end the inning.

Mahoney hurled four perfect innings for WSC (2-2) to keep Curry off the board. She would walk a pair and strike out three batters.

Colonels junior Janelle Mayo (Worcester, MA) upped her record to 1-1 as she allowed just two hits in all seven innings of work. Mayo allowed one walk while she fanned five batters.

The Lancers two hits were infield singles notched by sophomore Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA). Not one player got passed second base as only four reached first. 12 of Mayo's 19 outs came on the ground.

Sophomore Marcy Rumrill (Orange, MA) earned her first win of the season as she combined with Mahoney for the shutout in their victory against Amherst. Mahoney also picked up her first save.

In the opening inning the Lady Jeffs loaded the bases against Rumrill, but she was able cruise through the next four innings. Rumrill allowed six hits while she fanned two to go along with one free pass.  Mahoney came into the game with runners on first and second without outs and notched three strikeouts with one walk and one hit with one hit batter.

Mahoney swung a hot bat against Amherst as she went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Cordio went 2-for-3 with two trips to home plate. First-year Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) also went 2-for-3 and made several outstanding plays in the infield for the Lancers.

Worcester State continues its trip down south when they play Lasell at 9 AM and Wheaton at 11 AM tomorrow.
