Lancers Sweep Colonels, Extend Unbeaten Streak to Seven Straight

Worcester, MA- On Saturday afternoon, the Worcester State Women's Hockey team was back in action to take on Wilkes for the second consecutive night. The Lancers defeated the Colonels by a score of 4-1.

Heading into the game, Worcester State tried to get off to another great start in Philadelphia. Early in the contest, both teams' offenses had trouble gaining traction. With 13:44 remaining in the period, Worcester State went on their first power play and was successful when senior Cassidhe Wozniak (Turners Falls, Mass.) found the back of the net to put her team up 1-0. Even though Wilkes placed pressure on sophomore Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, Mass.) in the final minutes of the first period, Worcester State went into the first intermission leading 1-0.

As the second period began, Worcester State tried to expand on its one-goal lead. The Lancers were on their way to accomplishing that goal when they killed off the Wilkes power play opportunity. With 14:11 remaining in the period, Wilkes got on the board for the first time this weekend off a sliding goal by Anneke Bouma to tie the score at 1-1.  Worcester State responded when first year Cailey Ryan (Acton, Mass.) found the back of the net to provide the Lancers a 2-1 advantage. Then, a little over two minutes later, first year Jennarae Bateman (Forest Lake, Minn.) shot the puck five hole to increase the Lancer's lead to two goals. At the 3:30 remaining mark of the second period, graduate student Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) was able to score the third goal of the period for Worcester State, which provided her squad a commanding 4-1 lead. Wilkes went on a power play just before the end of the period, but could not cut the 4-1 Lancer lead heading into the second intermission.

When the third period began, Worcester State came out trying to protect their three-goal lead. Wilkes went on their second power play in under ten minutes of game time, but Czerniawski denied a player advantage goal from occurring. For the remainder of the game, the Lancer defense kept Wilkes off the board and provided Worcester State the weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory.
