Women's Soccer Bested By City Rival WPI, 3-1

Worcester, MA --- WPI senior Courtney Langley (Fairfield, ME) netted a pair of first-half markers to help lead the Engineers to a 3-1 victory over city rival Worcester State this afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Coughlin Field.

With the win, the Crimson and Gray have improved their mark to 5-0 while the Lancers slip to 1-3 with the setback.

Langley helped put the visitors on top 1-0 in the 18th minute when she took a cross from the middle of the field from senior Natalie McMillan (Acton, MA).

The Engineers extended their margin by two goals on the second tally of the game by Langley 2½ minutes later. She netted her fourth marker of the season off a long pass from the midfield by sophomore Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, NC).

The Boynton Hillers made the score 3-0 at the intermission in the 44th minute on a breakaway. Freshman Janie Fatal (Amesbury, MA) found a hole in the back line and passed it to classmate Emma Turton (Poland, ME) for her second goal of the campaign.

After the break, the Lancers had a great chance to get back into the game early on in the second when junior Alyssa Sawyer (W. Springfield, MA) was open from 10-yards away, but her attempt was rejected by WPI senior keeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY)

Senior Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) had a chance to finish, but her attempt was wide of the open net.

Worcester State broke the shutout in the 74th minute when sophomore Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA) created her own shot on the left side of the box after she took a middle cross from junior Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT). The tally was Macomber's second of the season.

The Blue and Gold nearly made it a one-goal game with five minutes left in regulation, however, Gonet was denied at point blank range by Willer.

WSU actually finished with the 18-11 edge in the shooting department (11-5 in second half) and the 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Willer turned aside six of the seven shots she saw between the pipes while Lancer sophomore Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA) collected four saves in the loss.

Both squads will host local non-conference opponents on Saturday. Worcester State entertains Clark at 2 PM while the Boynton Hillers play Fitchburg State in a 1:30 match-up.
