Women's Tennis Opens Season With 6-3 Triumph Over Newbury

Worcester State 6, Newbury 3

Brookline, MA --- The Worcester State women's tennis team defeated Newbury 6-3 in non conference action as they were paced by senior Ashley Perkins (Worcester, MA/Doherty) who won at first singles, 7-5 and 6-3 while she paired with classmate Courteney Blais (Paxton, MA) to win her first doubles matchup, 8-0.

Sophomore Marissa Boss (Holden, MA) defeated her opponent 6-4 and 6-1 in second singles while first year Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) captured her first career match victory at fifth singles.

Newbury sophomore Alex Derderian (N. Providence, RI) and senior Stephanie Valente (Pleasant Valley, CT) each handed second-year Jacqueline Shaw (Uxbridge, MA) and classmate Mariah Tangney (W. Boylston, MA) setbacks at third and fourth singles, respectively. Shaw was defeated in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1 while Tangney lost 6-4 and 6-2.

In second doubles, junior Amy Mach (Springfield, MA) and sophomore Erin Desmarais (Gardner, MA) lost to Derderian and sophomore Jen Swafford (Merrimack, NH).

The Lancers took home forfeited wins in sixth singles and third doubles due to Newbury having a short squad.
