Women's Tennis Drops Little East Opener To Plymouth State

Plymouth State 6, Worcester State 3

Plymouth, NH --- Sophomore Sara Burke (Barrington, RI), junior Laura Donovan (Acton, MA) and freshman Molly Heartfield (Dorset, VT) won two matches apiece Thursday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Worcester State University, 6-3, in a Little East Conference women's tennis match at the P.E. Center Courts.

The Panthers improve to 2-0 on the season, as they have won both LEC their matches to start the season, while WSU drops to 1-1 overall in their first Little East match since joining the conference this season.

PSU won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead, and then closed out the Lancers with wins in four of the six singles matches.  Burke and Donovan won their singles matches in the top two flights, both by scores of 6-0 and 6-1, and junior Lydia Smith (Marblehead, MA) sealed the team victory with her win at No. 4 singles.  Heartfield also collected a victory at No. 5 singles.

Burke teamed with Heartfield to win the No. 1 doubles match, and Donovan paired up with freshman Elizabeth Silsby (Dorset, VT) for a victory at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Courteney Blais (Paxton, MA) led the Lancers with a pair of victories, winning at third singles after teaming up with Marissa Boss (Holden, MA) for a triumph at second doubles.  Freshman Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) also won for the Lancers in a super-breaker at sixth singles.

The Panthers play their third straight home match this Thursday at 3:30 PM with a non-conference match against Endicott College. Worcester State plays its home opener Saturday against LEC foe Rhode Island College at Clark University at noon.
