Tennis falls to UMass Dartmouth, 9-0

Worcester, MA --- UMass Dartmouth handed Worcester State a hard-fought 9-0 defeat in Little East Conference women's tennis action this afternoon at Clark University.

The Corsairs (4-1, 3-0 LEC) were led by sophomore Nicole Pellieter (Swansea, MA) who won her number one singles match in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Other point winners for UMD included freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA) (7-5, 6-0) at fifth singles and junior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA) (6-0, 6-3) at sixth singles.

Worcester State (2-4, 0-2 LEC) battled through tough competition in the two other singles forcing tiebreakers in each. Sophomore Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) lost the tiebreaker in the first set to sophomore Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI) in third singles, 6-6 (7-4), 6-4, while freshman Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA) was defeated 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in second singles.

WSU sophomore Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) lost her first match of the season to sophomore Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA), 7-5, 6-0, after previously winning her first four for the Blue and Gold

In the doubles matches, Pellieter paired with Morey to win at first doubles, 8-2, Pollard teamed with Furtado for a victory at the second flight, 8-4, before Schulze and Girczyc, 8-3, came out on top for the Corsairs at third doubles.

Worcester State has two matches remaining this week as they host Little East rival Salem State on Thursday at 3:30 PM at Shrewsbury High and they travel to cross-town foe Anna Maria on Friday at 3. UMass Dartmouth is on the road against Johnson and Wales Thursday at 4 o'clock.
