LEICESTER, Mass. - Cross-town rivals met on the tennis court Tuesday afternoon with visiting Worcester State University women's tennis topping the host Becker College, 9-0.

Worcester State won its first match of the season to improve to 1-1, while Becker dropped to 1-3.

The Lancers took an early 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches. At number one doubles, the Becker College team of senior Livia Smith (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) battled to within 4-3 of Worcester State's Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.) and Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) where the Worcester State pair came through and pulled through with the 8-3 win.

Worcester State's doubles pair, Cassandra Gonclaves (Ludlow, Mass.) and Olivia Budney (Webster, Mass.) shutout Becker's Kerry Saltvick and Jessica Leger 8-0 in the final doubles competition of the afternoon.

Worcester State was in control of the first sets of all six singles matches. The second set of the singles matches were a little closer in range, but Worcester State had no trouble coming through to win all matches.

Both Shepard and Budney only allowed thier opponents two points in both sets of the singles matches. Shepard beat Becker opponent, Jacqueline Andrade, 6-2 and 6-0, while Budney defeated Emily Wodell 6-0 and 6-2.

The Lancers will soon host thier first home match on Friday, Sep. 11 against MCLA at Wachusett Regional High School. The games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
