Five Student-Athletes Earn Player of the Week Awards (Oct. 19-25)

WORCESTER, Mass. – Five Worcester State University student-athletes earned player of the week awards for the week of Oct. 19-25 as named by the Massachusetts State Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Monday afternoon.

 
 

Football:

Freshman, Jacob Maher (Marshfield, Mass.) was awarded the MASCAC Rookie of the Week Award for his offensive performance in the 44-41 win over Western Connecticut State University this past Saturday (Oct. 24) on Homecoming.

 

Maher finished the game with three receptions for 51 yards and two touchdowns - including the game-winner with 1:08 left in the game.

 

“Maher had a great game against the Colonials,” said head coach Brien Cullen. “He is really starting to come around and he is developing into a stellar player on our offensive team.”

 

 

Men’s Soccer:

Freshman forward, Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) was awarded his third MASCAC Rookie of the Week award for his offensive talents.

 

Brasil netted three goals in a 2-0 week for the Lancers. He assisted on the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Salem State and recorded a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Pine Manor earlier in the week.

 

“Brasil has been extremely influential to the team this year,” said assistant coach, Brian Cormier. “He performs at a top level not only in games, but in practice too. As part of the coaching staff, we are very impressed with Brasil, especially as he continues to improve on the season.”  

 

Brasil currently leads the team in points with 25 (10 goals and five assists).

 
 

Women’s Soccer:

Freshman midfielder, Tsara Leblanc (Gardner Mass.), was awarded her second-consecutive MASCAC women's soccer Rookie of the Week award.

 

LeBlanc netted a game-winning goal in the Lancers’ 2-0 win over Salem State this past Saturday (Oct. 24).

 

“Tsara is having a great first year with the program,” said head coach Kevin Cumberbatch. “Her hard work in practice is breeding results.”

 

LeBlanc currently leads the team in goals with eight on the season.

 
 

Women’s Volleyball:

Senior outside hitter, Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) was awarded the Women’s Volleyball MASCAC Player of the Week as she averaged 18.33 kills and 13.33 digs in a 2.1 week for the Lancers.

 

Cabral had 28 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks (one solo) with a .333 hitting percentage in the 3-2 win over MCLA earlier in the week. Not only did she record a double-double in this game, but she also tied for the Worcester State all-time record for most kills in a match.

 

In addition to her superb statistics in the game against the Trailblazers on senior night, Cabral added in a double-double against Curry College with 15 kills and 12 digs.

 

Cabral, who reached her 1,000th dig mid-season, is currently leading the team with 318 digs and 225 kills this season.

 
 

Freshman defensive specialist, Elexi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) was awarded the Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week as named by the MASCAC.

 

Miskiv averaged 17.67 digs and 1.33 service aces in the 2-1 week for the Lancers.  Miskiv logged 17 digs and two aces in the 3-2 victory over MCLA and 24 digs with an ace in the 3-0 win over Curry College.

 

 

 

 
 

MASCAC Weekly Honor Roll


Senior quarterback, Trevor Vasey (Cumberland, R.I.) completed 30-of-37 passes and totaled 269 yards with three touchdowns in the Lancers’ 44-41 win over Western Connecticut State. Vasey had touchdown passes of 21, 15, and 31 yards.

 

Freshman defensive back, Mike Holder (Lowell, Mass.) had a team-high 10 tackles (six solo) with 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tacklse for a loss in the Lancers’ 44-41 win over Western Connecticut State.

 

Freshman kicker, Noah Hwang (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished 2-for-2 on field goal attempts of 25 and 31 yards and 4-for-4 on PAT in the Lancers’ 44-41 win over Western Connecticut State.

 

Sophomore forward, Etjon Rapi (Worcester, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal in the men’s soccer team’s 1-0 win over Salem State on Saturday (Oct. 24).

 

Senior forward, Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, Mass.) scored a goal in the Lancers’ 2-0 win over Salem State this past weekend.

 

Senior golfer, Jackson Davis (Spencer, Mass.), placed tied at 10th place with an overall score of 154 (76-78) at Captain's Course in Brewster, Mass. for the NEIGA Championships. The Lancers overall finished 12th out of 22 Division III teams competing.
